Liberal Alliance (Greek Liberals) would like to express its disappointment over the lack of an agreement on themacedonian issue. Unfortunately for the people of the Balkans, nationalism obstructed the achievement of a consensus based on the UN proposals.

Liberal Alliance supports that justice, equality of citizens of every country before the Law, respect for the territorial integrity of every country, freedom to express one’s national identity, rejection of any kind of secessionism, should form the basis for peace in tormented regions like the Balkans.

Only within this environment can minorities living in any country, become bridges for cooperation, and for mutual understanding, and in this way they can render obsolete any plans from extreme nationalists or possibly shadowy agencies that aim to use them with a higher purpose to changes in borders.

For these reasons Liberal Alliance proposes the inclusion of the countries of the Western Balkans in the European Union as soon as possible, so that EU law can become the foundation on which the people of the Balkans can work together and the EU institutions can protect the individual rights of every citizen.

In order to advance this vision, and to prevent future crisis, it is necessary to establish a permanent framework of cooperation between the Balkan countries. Liberal Alliance calls the other liberal parties of the region particularly those that participate in governments to co-ordinate their action towards this direction.

Liberal Alliance proposals engulf the lessons learned from a dark and bloody Balkan 20th century, and these proposals are the best way to transform South East Europe from a source of instability and war to a region of peace and prosperity of its people.
